Washington, DC - Congressman Scott Fitzgerald's bill, the Countering Chinese Espionage Reporting Act, has successfully passed out of the Judiciary Committee Markup. The bill aims to strengthen the United States' response to the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) ongoing economic theft of U.S. intellectual property. It specifically directs the Attorney General to prepare an annual report on the Department of Justice's efforts to counter Chinese national security threats, including trade secret theft, intellectual property and research theft, and threats from non-traditional collectors.

The passage of this bill comes as a critical response to the threat posed by the Chinese government's Made in China 2025 initiative. This initiative, announced in 2015, seeks to surpass U.S. technology superiority and has resulted in a significant increase in American intellectual property theft, estimated to cost the U.S. economy up to $600 billion annually.

Congressman Fitzgerald expressed his satisfaction with the unanimous passage of the bill in the Judiciary Committee, stating, "We cannot allow China's pervasive theft of American IP go unchecked." He emphasized the importance of addressing this issue and protecting American intellectual property from further exploitation by China.

The Countering Chinese Espionage Reporting Act is a significant step towards combatting Chinese economic espionage and safeguarding U.S. intellectual property. The unanimous support from Congressman Fitzgerald's colleagues in the Judiciary Committee highlights the recognition of the urgent need to address this ongoing threat.
