Senator Rob Hutton has expressed his concern over the Wauwatosa School District's decision to close its STEM school, WSTEM, located within Wilson Elementary School. The closure was announced this week after months of apprehension among community members and students who valued the specialized education in science, technology, engineering, and math.

"The decision to close WSTEM is a significant setback for future cohorts of exceptional and aspirational students who want a STEM-focused program but will no longer have access to one," stated Senator Hutton. He emphasized that STEM education is essential for preparing students for future employment opportunities where such skills are increasingly demanded by employers. According to Hutton, the closure undermines many great opportunities for students interested in these fields.

Senator Hutton underscored the importance of supporting STEM programs as they foster innovation and equip students with necessary skills in an evolving job market. He urged the school district to find solutions to maintain STEM-specific programming for interested students.

"I urge the district to work with all stakeholders to find a viable path forward. Our students deserve access to the educational resources that best set them up for a future of unlimited opportunities, prosperity and fulfillment," said Hutton.

Hutton also praised the efforts of Wauwatosa's students and teachers in achieving high academic and athletic performance but criticized those involved in supporting the closure decision as being "unserious about getting our kids a truly great education."
