State Representative Adam Neylon (R-Pewaukee) announced that Assembly Bill 664, focused on artificial intelligence (AI), has been signed into law by Governor Evers, establishing the 2023 Wisconsin Act 123.

In a statement released today, Neylon said, “I’m pleased to see Governor Evers signed Act 123 into law. This act fights back against disinformation in political campaigns by requiring any audio or video communications paid for by candidates and groups trying to influence elections, to include a simple disclosure if the ad contains AI-generated content, such as a ‘deepfake.’”

Neylon emphasized the importance of this legislation in maintaining trust in the electoral system. “Some voters have become suspicious of our electoral system, and AI-generated content in political campaign ads will only serve to inflate this suspicion. AI technology is accessible and can make it nearly impossible to distinguish between fact and fiction in advertisements. By requiring transparency in campaign communications, we can ensure Wisconsin residents remain informed.”
