Congressman Scott Fitzgerald of Wisconsin's 5th District questioned FBI Director Kash Patel during a House Judiciary Committee hearing about the assassination of Charlie Kirk and the FBI’s ongoing investigation.

Fitzgerald raised concerns regarding campus security at Utah Valley University, where the incident occurred. He referenced reports that the alleged shooter arrived on campus several hours before the event and was seen jumping off the roof of the building where the shooting took place.

“According to public reports, the alleged shooter arrives on the Utah Valley University campus nearly four hours before the shooting. The suspect is then captured on security footage jumping off the roof of the alleged shooting location,” said Congressman Scott Fitzgerald. “I think for members of Congress, especially after Butler, Pennsylvania, it’s just unimaginable that there could be some type of security breakdown prior to an event of that size where somebody could access a rooftop.”

Fitzgerald also addressed whether investigators believe others may have been involved in planning or executing the attack. He cited communications discovered between the suspect and his boyfriend as cause for further inquiry.

“Public reports have suggested the shooter acted alone. But given the discovery of Discord messages and text messages between the shooter and his boyfriend, the public deserves answers,” said Congressman Scott Fitzgerald. “I'm sure the FBI will continue to investigate fully and thoroughly. I raise this concern because I’m not convinced that was the case in Butler, Pennsylvania.”

Scott Fitzgerald has held his congressional seat since defeating Tom Palzewicz in 2020 with 60.1% of votes and winning re-election against Mike Van Someren in 2022 with 64.4%.

A recording of Fitzgerald’s questioning was made available following Wednesday's hearing.
