The Alliance Board of Directors has unanimously decided to support the proposed expansion of Interstate 94 through western Waukesha County. This expansion covers a 12.5-mile stretch from County Highway SS to the county line and is deemed crucial for workforce access, economic development, and long-term competitiveness.
The I-94 corridor between Milwaukee and Madison is considered one of Wisconsin’s key economic routes. The region around Oconomowoc, Summit, and nearby areas is experiencing significant growth, leading to congestion and crash rates that are reportedly up to seven times higher than the state average. With over 75,000 vehicles using this segment daily and many commuters traveling between Waukesha, Jefferson, and Milwaukee Counties, the need for investment in this infrastructure is described as clear and urgent.
The Waukesha County Business Alliance is spearheading a coalition with regional partners such as ThriveED in Jefferson County to advocate for this project. These coalition members are supporting the initiative through letters of support and legislative outreach efforts aimed at demonstrating strong business and community alignment.
Recently in Madison, the Joint Finance Committee (JFC) was expected to discuss the transportation budget but did not do so. Senator Julian Bradley has put forward a budget motion to formally list the I-94 expansion project. The Alliance has submitted letters of support to Senator Bradley as well as JFC Co-Chairs Born and Marklein. Additionally, they are working closely with County Executive Farrow’s office to maintain momentum behind this effort.
Community involvement is encouraged as support is seen as critical. Organizations can join the coalition by adding their names to letters of support or participating in future outreach efforts. Demonstrating that this project is a shared priority across the region is considered essential.
