Waukesha County health officials are urging residents to test their homes for radon gas this January, coinciding with National Radon Action Month. The call to action highlights the potential risk of radon exposure, which is identified as the second leading cause of lung cancer. Many homes in southeast Wisconsin reportedly have elevated radon levels.
"It is important to test your home for radon to know it is safe. Radon test kits are a simple first step in protecting yourself and your family’s health," stated Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow.
Radon is an odorless, radioactive gas naturally present in the ground that can infiltrate buildings through foundations. Homes, regardless of age, can have unsafe levels of radon. State data indicates that between 40 and 50 percent of homes tested in Southeast Wisconsin show elevated airborne concentrations on the main living level where residents spend most of their time.
Testing during January is recommended because homes are typically sealed for winter, which may affect radon levels. Conducting a radon test requires minimal effort and expense; testing kits cost approximately $10 and can be obtained from the Southeast Wisconsin Radon Information Center (SEWRIC) at 262-896-8300, local public health agencies, or home supply stores.
