Girls flag football is gaining popularity across the United States and has recently been recognized as an official sport for the 2028 Olympics. Students at KM High School have eagerly awaited this development to compete in what they consider a cherished American pastime.
A group of girls at KMHS had long aspired to establish a football team, feeling limited by their participation in the annual homecoming powderpuff game. Watching the boys play on Friday nights left them wanting more opportunities to engage with the sport they love. This year, their efforts culminated in forming their own league under Coach Mac, who brings experience as both a former flag football coach and the current head football coach.
The team boasts considerable talent, with many members excelling in other sports that complement their football skills. Casey Navarro serves as quarterback, noted for her impressive throwing ability. Grace Walczak applies her soccer defensive skills effectively on the field. Riley Vertz leverages her rugby background as a formidable running back, while Keegan Lodes contributes her track and field speed.
The team's performance has been strong, maintaining an undefeated record with significant victories against opponents such as Mukwonago (41-12), MKE Washington (46-12), Greenfield (52-34), Waukesha West (57-24), and Muskego Red (30-26). Matches are held Sunday evenings at Muskego High School's indoor facility.
The team has attracted substantial interest on social media and enjoys growing fan support within the KM community and beyond. There is ambition to expand this program to include the Classic 8 conference, with aspirations of establishing it as a new WIAA sport statewide.
