County Executive Paul Farrow has proposed a 0.5% sales tax for Waukesha County, slated to begin on July 1, 2025. The revenue distribution plan includes allocating 60% to the county, up to 20% to local governments, and up to 20% for property tax reduction.

The Alliance has expressed its opposition to this proposed tax increase. "As an organization, we have already opposed a 0.5% county sales tax in 2025 and have shared that position publicly," stated the Alliance. Despite having previously set their stance, the Alliance's Policy Board and Executive Committee voted unanimously this week to continue opposing the proposal as the County Board prepares for a vote on October 22.

Concerns from members about the rushed timeline and potential impacts have been noted by the Alliance. "We have listened to your concerns and are acting on behalf of our members in telling the County that this is too much, too fast," they asserted.

The Alliance highlighted current economic pressures such as rising costs and inflation affecting both businesses and consumers. They argued against imposing additional financial burdens on residents with an estimated $50-$60 million increase due to the proposed tax. The organization emphasized Waukesha County's history of fiscal conservatism, stating it should only levy taxes necessary for addressing projected fiscal gaps.

In response, the Alliance is urging collaboration between the County, state legislators, business leaders, and community members to tackle budgetary challenges without compromising Waukesha County's favorable business environment. "The Alliance has consistently indicated that we would work with the County and our state legislators on the best path going forward," they concluded.
