Renowned author Katherine Applegate, known for her best-selling and Newbery Award-winning works, made a visit to Brookfield East on Wednesday, May 15. She engaged with an audience of 400 students, families, and staff from Elmbrook and surrounding communities. The purpose of her visit was to promote her latest young adult novel, 'The One and Only Family', which concludes her 'One and Only Ivan' series. Throughout her illustrious career, Applegate has sold over 35 million copies of her books.
During the event, Applegate shared insights into how she generates ideas for stories. She encouraged writing about topics that one is passionate or frustrated about and also shared the real-life story of Ivan the gorilla from her books. Following her presentation, she spent several hours answering questions from the audience and signing copies of her books.
Kay Koepsel-Benning, Director of Library Services expressed gratitude for Applegate's visit. "We were so grateful to have Ms. Applegate speak to our community," said Koepsel-Benning. "Her engaging presentation and thoughtful interactions with our students and community members served as a great advocate for literacy in Elmbrook and beyond."
Elmbrook was fortunate to be one of only three Wisconsin stops on Applegate's promotional tour. The visit was facilitated by Elmbrook’s community partner, Boswell Books. Since 2015, numerous award-winning authors have visited the District as part of a joint initiative aimed at engaging students in reading and writing.
