The German Language and School Society (DSSV) annually recognizes exceptional students of the German language each May. This year, they distributed over $35,000 in awards to deserving Wisconsin German students. The accolades are granted based on both top performance on the National German Exam and an essay competition.
The competition is known for its rigorous standards, but this year Elmbrook district outdid itself by setting a new record with 13 prizes, surpassing last year's record of seven.
Among the winners were Senior Ayla Lotegeluaki from Brookfield East High School (BEHS), who won one of the top prizes at $1,000, and Junior Sophia Armstrong from Brookfield Central (BC), who secured a significant cash prize of $500. Additionally, Senior Amoolya Mammula from BEHS penned this year's second-place essay. Considering that there were 438 essays submitted across Wisconsin, these achievements underscore the remarkable talent among Elmbrook’s World Language students.
This year’s combined scholarships amounted to more than $2,000. In addition to student awards, DSSV named Kelsie Pattillo-Miller from Elmbrook as the 2024 German Teacher of the Year.
