Alumni Spotlight: Barbara (Schomann) Consigny

Barbara Consigny, a member of the original graduating class of Brookfield Central in 1958, has left a lasting impact on her community through her dedication to education. After graduating from Brookfield Central, Barbara continued to give back by becoming a Brookfield Elementary Kindergarten teacher for many years.

Barbara's journey in education began at Leland Elementary School in Elm Grove and Hawthorne Junior High in Wauwatosa before she joined the inaugural class of Brookfield Central when the school opened in 1955. Throughout her time at BC, Barbara was involved in various activities such as cheerleading and the school newspaper, and she fondly remembers the many impactful teachers she had during her high school years.

Reflecting on her teaching career, Barbara shared, "I absolutely loved teaching my students. It was the most rewarding job to work with them and help them learn to love learning." She continued to enhance her skills by earning a Masters degree in Education from Aurora University in the 1980s.

Barbara's dedication to education did not go unnoticed as she was awarded Elmbrook's Employee of the Year in 1997. In 2004, after years of shaping young minds, Barbara retired from Brookfield Elementary, expressing her deep satisfaction with her career, "It was a very fulfilling career and I loved every minute of teaching in Elmbrook."

Today, Barbara enjoys spending time with her children and grandchildren, traveling across the U.S. and Europe, and staying active in her book club and community volunteering. She remains passionate about the Elmbrook area, emphasizing its kid-focused environment, "I love this area and I loved teaching in Elmbrook; it’s so kid-focused and that makes all the difference."
