WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Scott Fitzgerald released the following statement in response to the passage of the Fiscal Responsibility Act:

“This evening, the House passed the largest deficit reduction bill in the history of our country, said Congressman Scott Fitzgerald. The agreement between House Republicans and President Biden avoids default, caps spending, protects Social Security, Medicare, and veterans' benefits, expands work requirements for welfare recipients, of which nearly 80% of Wisconsinites support, and enables us to pass further spending cuts that reduce the deficit through this year's appropriations process."

The legislation accomplishes the following:
1. Rejects $5 trillion in new taxes proposed by the White House.
2. Removes $20 billion in funding from the IRS.
3. Eliminates the freeze on federal student loan debt repayment.
4. Caps discretionary spending for FY24 and FY25.
5. Restores regular order in appropriations process.
6. Enacts permitting reform to boost energy production.
7. Strengthens work requirements for welfare recipients.
8. Implements "PAYGO" to offset costs of new regulations.
