Waukesha County Technical College issued the following announcement on Jan. 5

Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) will honor the important work of activist and influential civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 17, with a special event featuring Rev. Jamie Washington, Ph.D., founder and president of the Washington Consulting Group. 

The event, which is free and open to the public, will be held in the Anthony J. Natalizio Center (AJN) in Building S, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and will include a Taste of Heritage lunch along with Washington’s keynote address.

In his presentation, Washington will focus on how, in a real sense, all life is interrelated and how all people are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, attired in a single garment of destiny; whatever affects one person directly – affects all indirectly.

Known as “The Engagement Specialist,” Washington sees himself as an instrument of change. Every day. he works to help people find the best in themselves and others, and he lives by the words of one of his favorite songs, “If I Can Help Somebody," sung by the late Mahalia Jackson:

“If I can help somebody as I pass along, if I can cheer somebody with a word or a song, if I can show somebody that he, she, zi or they are traveling wrong, then my living shall not be in vain.”

WCTC has hosted Martin Luther King Jr. Day programs for students and the community for several years, said Cyndy Taormino, WCTC’s coordinator of Cultural Engagement and Inclusion in the Office of Belonging, Access and Cultural Engagement (BACE), and the events allow members of the WCTC and greater community a time for reflection.

“Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a defining moment each year, when communities come together to promote equity and take action to create continuing meaningful conversations about racial justice and equality,” Taormino said.  “Martin Luther King Jr. Day allows us to honor the life and legacy of the leaders of the civil rights movement. We must rediscover the tools activists like Dr. King leveraged to advance a more expansive and inclusive society.”
