The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) has announced its intention to recommend the I-94 Western Waukesha project to the Transportation Projects Commission (TPC) at an upcoming meeting. This recommendation follows an evaluation process in which the I-94 Western Waukesha County corridor received the highest total score among nine corridors considered for further study.
In a statement, the organization said, "This marks a critical step forward in advancing a project that is essential to our region. We are especially encouraged that the I-94 Western Waukesha County corridor received the highest total score among the nine corridors evaluated for further study. This affirms what our members, businesses, and communities have consistently emphasized: the high traffic volumes, frequent serious accidents, and economic importance of this corridor all meet the key criteria and justify its inclusion in WisDOT’s recommendations to the TPC. This segment of I-94 is vital to both regional and statewide economic growth."
The department was commended for its use of data-driven methods in evaluating transportation projects, focusing on factors such as traffic flow, economic impact, and public safety. The next phase for this project will be an environmental study.
Acknowledgement was given to several individuals and organizations for their support of the project. These include County Executive Paul Farrow, the Waukesha County Department of Public Works, Senator Julian Bradley, Representative Cindi Duchow, legislative partners, local businesses and stakeholders such as the City of Delafield, Oconomowoc Area Chamber of Commerce, and ThriveED.
The Alliance stated its continued commitment to leading advocacy efforts for improvements along this corridor: "The Alliance is proud to be leading the Western Waukesha County I-94 Coalition bringing together business leaders, elected officials, and community stakeholders to advocate for this important corridor. We remain fully committed to supporting and advocating for the continued development of this corridor and look forward to working collaboratively with all stakeholders to advance the project through its next phases."
They concluded by emphasizing broader benefits: "We firmly believe this project is not just good for Waukesha County, it’s good for Wisconsin."
