Fitzgerald stated, "I join Catholics in Wisconsin and around the world in offering my prayers following the passing of Pope Francis. His papacy left a lasting impact on the faith community and shaped a significant era for the Catholic Church." He also reflected on a personal meeting with the Pope in August 2023, noting it as a memorable event in his life.

Acknowledging the transition period the Church now faces, Fitzgerald commented on the future, saying, "As the Church enters a period of transition, this is a pivotal moment to reflect on the values and direction that will define its future—one that calls for renewed focus on timeless truths, strong moral leadership, and a clear commitment to the values that have long anchored the faith."
