Today, the Wisconsin Assembly passed Assembly Bill 24. The bill mandates sheriffs to verify the citizenship status of suspects booked into jail for a felony. If they cannot verify this status, they are required to notify US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In cases where a federal detainer is issued, compliance with it is mandatory.

Rep. Adam Neylon supported AB 24 and provided his reasoning: "This common-sense legislation ensures that violent criminals who are here illegally can’t find refuge in our communities simply because some local officials refuse to enforce the law."
