The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has issued a reminder for the public to prioritize ice safety as early winter sets in across the state. The DNR emphasizes that no ice should be considered safe, urging caution on all waterbodies.

Lt. Jacob Holsclaw, DNR Off-Highway Vehicle Administrator, noted the deceptive nature of early ice formation: “After we have the first cold nights, we start to see the early ice. It may look solid to the naked eye, but it's not.” He explained that cracks and variations in ice thickness often go unnoticed.

The department highlighted hidden dangers beneath the ice, such as currents, debris, and underground springs feeding lakes and rivers. “These factors and more are why no ice is ever considered safe – no matter the month,” Holsclaw added.

While the DNR does not monitor ice conditions directly, local fishing clubs, outfitters, and bait shops provide current updates on conditions. The agency suggests avoiding travel over ice whenever possible for safer winter activities.

For those venturing onto frozen waterbodies, it is crucial to consider each one's unique characteristics. Checking for inlets, outlets, narrows, or currents is recommended since these can affect ice stability. Additionally, some smaller lakes may have aerators that impact ice cover.

Awareness of pressure ridges or ice heaves is also essential. These formations can lead to thin ice and open water due to temperature changes and high winds. Such occurrences are common on Lake Winnebago and the Bay of Green Bay.

In case of an emergency where someone falls through the ice, staying calm is vital. Victims should try to assist themselves out while calling for help immediately. Rescuers are advised to use a rope or similar tool to prevent falling through as well.
