In the United States, one of the government's primary responsibilities is to ensure the safety of its citizens. This involves creating a society where law-abiding individuals can live peacefully. However, some officials seem reluctant to enforce policies that deter criminal behavior, leading to increased crime and reduced quality of life.
Milwaukee faces significant safety challenges, with 116 homicides reported in 2024 alone. The city has seen consecutive years of high violence rates, affecting even innocent children. As crime rises in Milwaukee, neighboring areas also experience similar trends.
In 2021, Milwaukee ranked eighth nationwide for vehicle thefts, and these incidents remain significantly higher than pre-pandemic levels. Reckless driving continues to be a major issue. City Attorney Evan Goyke has pledged stricter enforcement against dangerous drivers, a stance that may inspire others.
Local businesses are also impacted by crime, including organized retail theft. Many retailers have been forced to either increase security or close stores in vulnerable neighborhoods to protect their employees.
While public policy cannot solve all issues related to crime, lawmakers can take steps to improve safety for families and communities. Over the last session, numerous bills were introduced with this goal in mind.
Senate Bill 517 aimed at addressing police turnover by updating laws that allow harassment through courts. Recruiting new officers remains challenging in Milwaukee due to current conditions.
Another proposal, Senate Bill 86, sought to limit prosecutors' ability to reduce charges for violent crimes. Police express frustration over re-arresting offenders who quickly return to criminal activities after release.
Despite these efforts being vetoed by the Governor, a state constitutional amendment was passed allowing judges more discretion in setting bail amounts—a move supported directly by voters.
Efforts continue towards bipartisan solutions on critical justice issues. Updating how violent juvenile offenders are treated is a priority for future sessions as current systems lack sufficient accountability measures.
Ensuring safety and accountability remains essential for Wisconsin residents amid political divisions—common ground must be found on these vital concerns.
