Congressman Scott Fitzgerald (WI-05) recently voted in favor of H.R. 7109, also known as the Equal Representation Act. This proposed legislation seeks to mandate that the Census Bureau reintroduce the citizenship question on its decennial census and allow only U.S. citizens to be considered when determining the number of congressional seats.
Rep. Fitzgerald issued a statement explaining his support for the bill, saying, "According to a 2022 Census Bureau estimate, there are over 22 million noncitizens in the United States, but those individuals are still counted the same as legal citizens toward the apportionment of congressional districts." He further expressed his concern about noncitizens influencing electoral representation or federal resources.
"It’s absurd that noncitizens can serve as a deciding factor when determining electoral representation or federal resources," he said. The congressman added that he was proud to support what he referred to as "commonsense legislation", which ensures only U.S. citizens are counted when determining representation in the Census.
