Wisconsin State Representative Scott Fitzgerald said that severe flooding in Wisconsin’s Fifth Congressional District and across the state has caused significant damage. He joined the delegation in urging the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to “act swiftly” and support the “recovery process.”

“Severe flooding in WI-05 and across Wisconsin tragically caused significant damage to communities and infrastructure,” said U.S. Rep. Scott Fitzgerald (R-Wi). “I joined the Wisconsin delegation in urging FEMA to act swiftly and support the recovery process.”

According to a letter from the Wisconsin delegation, historic rainfall on August 9-10 led to severe flooding across Milwaukee, damaging homes, businesses, and infrastructure. Some areas received over 14 inches of rain within 24 hours, with rivers reaching record levels. The delegation emphasized that conducting a timely Joint Preliminary Damage Assessment is critical for securing federal support for recovery efforts. They noted that state officials are compiling detailed damage information and urged FEMA to collaborate with Wisconsin Emergency Management “as soon as possible” to ensure the assessment and recovery process proceeds without delay.

“We anticipate that the state will promptly submit a formal request for a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration following completion of the Joint PDA,” said the Wisconsin delegation in their letter. They added that federal assistance would be crucial for repairing damage from these severe weather events and supporting long-term community recovery. The delegation expressed appreciation for FEMA’s continued partnership with Wisconsin and urged timely consideration of this urgent request.

State reports indicate over $43 million in public sector damage across six Wisconsin counties. According to state sources, FEMA, Wisconsin Emergency Management, and local officials will conduct a joint preliminary damage assessment in September to support the Public Assistance program. Homeowners not present during assessments remain eligible for assistance. Residents are advised to contact their insurance agents to check coverage and report any flood damage by calling 211. Additionally, homeowners should document damage with photos and save receipts for expenses such as temporary housing, repairs, and appliance replacement.

Fitzgerald represents Wisconsin’s Fifth Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He previously served in the Wisconsin State Senate from 1995 to 2021 in roles including Majority Leader and Minority Leader. According to House.gov, he graduated from Hustisford High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh. Fitzgerald also served in the U.S. Army Reserve for 27 years before retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel.
