Congressman Scott Fitzgerald of Wisconsin’s 5th District released a statement regarding the election of Pope Leo XIV, the first American to assume the papacy.

Fitzgerald expressed that this event is both “historic and joyful” for Catholics globally and in the United States. He emphasized that Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost’s rise to become Pope Leo XIV showcases “the Church’s global reach and the enduring strength of its mission.”

The congressman further noted, “This is a proud day for our country and for American Catholics,” wishing that “the Holy Spirit guide Pope Leo XIV as he leads the Church into a new chapter of hope and renewal.”
