Avina of Pewaukee was the third largest nursing home in Waukesha County during the first quarter of 2026, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) shows.

The facility offered a total of 120 beds, surpassing the Waukesha County average by 31 beds as of the first quarter of 2026, and an average of 84.3 residents received care there during that time.

The CMS assigned Avina of Pewaukee an overall rating of 2 out of 5, lower than the state average rating of 3 for Wisconsin nursing facilities.

Aria of Brookfield was the largest nursing home in Waukesha County for this timeframe, offering 170 beds. The second largest was Complete Care at Kensington, with 150 available beds.

Avina of Pewaukee had incurred $95,791 in fines and faced one penalty by the end of the first quarter of 2026.

There were eight for-profit nursing homes in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, at that time.

Estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau indicate the country’s population of older adults is increasing as the number of children decreases. Between 2020 and 2024, the national 65-and-older population expanded by 13%, while the under-18 population dropped by 1.7%. The growth of older Americans has accelerated over the past 100 years, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 analysis found that nearly half of adults in this group, or about 28 million, are expected to need long-term services and supports, and projected that more than a third could ultimately require care in a nursing home.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education organization. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
